At the weekend i went to see a screening of the film Princess by Danish filmmaker Anders Morgenthaler. The film was being shown at the Hyde Park Picture House as part of the Leeds International Film Festival.
The film's protagonist is August who has returned home after years away doing missionary work only to find that his sister Christina has died of an overdose. Christina was a porn star called 'The Princess' and left behind a young daughter. August takes the young girl away from the brothel and prostitute who was looking after her and embarks on a brutal mission of revenge on everyone involved in his sisters porn star life.
The film using stunning animation as well as sections, which are filmed using real actors. These sections are used normally when the animated characters are watching videos from the past on TV. I personally feel that Anders Morgenthaler should have stuck to just using animation as the two different styles didn't seem to merge very well. The story touches on some dark subjects and in turn this makes it very moving and in some ways the animation can mask this. I think this is why Morgenthaler decided to have the sections with real actors to try and bring back a sense reality. Overall i think Princess was a moving and emotionally charged film. Morgenthaler main aim through this film was to destroy peoples illusions around the adult film industry and to make it less alluring or glamorous. Its definitely a film people should see and in my opinion should go on general release.
